Cretan soprano Theano Papadaki is an artist with an instinct for song interpretation and a visceral presence on the opera stage.
In May 2024 Theano and pianist Thomas Eeckhout won the third Prize at the International Lied Competition “Bolko von Hochberg” in Goerlitz, Germany. In June 2023 she appeared as a soloist alongside Miriam Allan, Anna Dennis and Mariana Flores in Deutsche Grammophon’s documentary series A Journey through Monteverdi’s Italy, conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner.
Theano loves collaborating with chamber music ensembles. Recent successes in recital include Respighi’s Il tramonto, Ravel’s Shéhérazade, and a programme around Ophelia and Hamlet (all at Milton Court Concert Hall, Barbican) and concerts curated by Julius Drake, Graham Johnson, and Eugene Asti.
Theano enjoys performing contemporary music and has worked with composers including Georges Aperghis, Cheryl Frances-Hoad and Christian Jost. Her operatic roles span works from Monteverdi & Rameau to Handel & Mozart, with a special love for the bel canto repertoire, with the voice for Donizetti & Bellini as well as contemporary repertoire including Stravinsky, Previn, Poulenc & Musgrave.
With the Monteverdi Choir, she has performed repertoire from Bach Motets to Berlioz’s Les Troyens and more, at some of the greatest venues in Europe: BBC Proms, the Berlin and Paris Philharmonics, the Chateau de Versailles Royal Opera, the Salzburg, Berlioz and Bach Festivals, and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.
Theano graduated with Distinction from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, having previously studied violin and musicology in Greece and France.
